Without obedience training your puppy’s training is incomplete.

Different types of rewards will work for different puppies; some will respond to food treats while some may respond to toys or a show of love like gentle stroking. But generally puppies enjoy being given attention and also learn to give verbal praises to your puppy when she responses correctly during training.

Step 2

The very first obedience training command for a puppy is the “SIT” command. Have your puppy on leash and then hold up the food reward just above her nose.

Then gently pull the leash upwards and at the same time raising the food reward upwards but still just above her nose with intention of getting your puppy into a sitting position.

If you puppy does not sit, then gently make it sit by pushing its rear downwards until it sits and then say in a loud and clear tone SIT, at which point you give it the food reward with some verbal praises.

Do this a few times daily until it your puppy understands the sit command.

Step 3

After your puppy has mastered the sit command then you can move on to teach your puppy how to lay down on your command.

You start out with the sit command and of course with a reward at hand as well, then from the sitting position and with the food reward within your puppy’s view apply a little pressure on the leash to get your puppy to lying position and at which point you say in a loud and clear tone DOWN and then give it the food reward and verbal praises.
Again repeat this process until your puppy masters how to lie down on command.

Step 4

After your puppy can lie down and sit on command then you will want to teach her the stay command. This particular obedience training command is quite important because your puppy must learn to remain on one spot.

The previous rules still applies and that is you should have your puppy on leash and also the food reward. Get your puppy to the sitting position on command then show your puppy the palm of your hand as a way of telling her to stay in that position while you take about one to two steps backward and at the same time maintaining an eye contact with your puppy.

If she attempt to get up as you back off make some soft sound of rejection while at the same time getting her back to the sitting position. Once she stays in that sitting position while you back off then you give her the food reward along with the usual verbal praises. Repeat this process until your puppy master the stay command.

  1. laura h – Looks like a Maine Coon. These guys don't reach full size 'til their a several years old! It's not umonomcn for them to weigh 20+ lbs and have size 8 feets. For the most part, if this breed was any more laid back, they'd be dead. Love shot #2 — he looks so regal looking over his kingdom with the clouds around his head!
